圖書簡介:
Davis's theme is how philosophy is both partially constitutive of and a model for dealing with certain fundamental tensions at the heart of politics. His mode of commentary involves noticing textual perplexities and using them to shed light on his theme.

Davis articulates these tensions in a number of ways. Within virtue itself, it appears as the duality of the noble, understood as self-sufficient and self-conscious perfection, and the just, understood as that which enables us to satisfy our need for one another. Within the city, it appears in many ways: the city as comprehensive and the city as authoritative; equality as the condition of political life and hierarchy as the condition of good political life; self-understanding as the consent of the governed and as the wisdom of the governors.
